USS Queenfish downed USS Swordfish 6-2 Sunday after- noon at Millican
Field to cap- ture the 1983 Intramural Slow Pitch Softball championship
with a near perfect 19-2 seas- on.
Dennis Thomas was the first man to get on base followed by Tim Liden who sent Thomas Another single by Paul Lampe brought Thomas home for the
go ahead run and sent pinch runner Ron Daoust to third. A wild throw from the right fielder moved Lampe to second and in scoring position.
It was two men on and two outs after Mike Williams grounded out to the Pitcher. Swinging a big bat. Phil Boyer hit a double into left field to bring both runners home and give Queenfish a 5.2 lead. With Boyer on second base, Bill King singled to left field for another run and a 6-2 lead before the third out.
Good defensive play closed the door to home plate and Swordfish went scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to finish the season in second place
Queenfish beat Wolfpac 8-3 in the semifinal game earlier the same day and went into the championship match warmed up and backed by a cheering section of nearly 50 spectators.
Queenfish 's only two loses were to Skate A and Barbel A, their first and third games of the season.
Scott Appleby led the team in hitting with a .575 season average and 10 homers. The team averaged 13.5 runs per game and pitcher Phil Boyer kept the opposition to a measly 2.5 average during the season..
